Coastal development

Development within the environmentally sensitive coastal marine area brings unique challenges. We have a long track record of consenting coastal projects. For example, we assisted Auckland Transport in obtaining consents for a new ferry terminal at Half Moon Bay, and are currently acting for the NZ Transport Agency in relation to a new walking and cycling bridge across the Mangere Inlet.

We also have specialist knowledge of the Marine and Coastal Area (Takutai Moana) Act 2011 and work closely with our Māori Business Team on these issues

Recent experience

Half Moon Bay ferry terminal

We advised Auckland Transport on its applications for coastal permits and land use consents to construct a new ferry facility at Half Moon Bay. Key issues involved the potential effects on the coastal environment, landscape and visual effects, noise and exclusive occupation of the common coastal marine area. We represented Auckland Transport at the Council hearing and the consents were granted in January 2016.

Matiatia Marina

We acted for Auckland Transport in relation to a new marina which was proposed to be located adjacent to Matiatia Wharf on Waiheke Island. Matiatia Wharf is the primary port for commuters and tourists travelling to and from the Island, and is busy with buses and private vehicles, particularly over the summer period. Traffic travelling to and from the marina had the potential to affect the safety and efficiency of buses servicing the ferry operations. We represented Auckland Transport in the Environment Court (direct referral) in relation to these issues. Consent for the marina was refused.

Old Mangere Bridge

The NZ Transport Agency has sought resource consents to replace the Old Mangere Bridge in Auckland with a new purpose-built walking and cycling bridge. We represented the NZ Transport Agency at a Council hearing to consider the resource consent applications and are now advising on an appeal lodged in the Environment Court against the grant of the consents.

Ngapipi Road Intersection Upgrade

We are acting for Auckland Transport in relation to resource consents to upgrade the Ngapipi Road intersection. The suite of consents being sought include coastal permits for reclamations and discharge permits for discharges to the coastal marine area
